Datawell location HaarlemWelcome to our website

Datawell is a private company that develops and produces oceanographical measuring instruments. Our best known products are wave buoys and ship motion sensors. Apart from wave height and wave direction, our buoys also monitor sea surface temperature. Sensors for other climatological parameters, such as air temperature, are under development.

HeerhugowaardDatawell products have proven to excellently withstand the harsh marine environment. The low-power sensors and electronics enable long time continuous operation. The Datawell design stands for reliable products with long life expectation.

Datawell products serve customers all around the world. Harbour authorities, dredging companies, oil companies, surveying companies, universities and other scientific research institutes opt for Datawell quality.

Launch of a WaveriderHistory
Datawell was established in 1961 as a research laboratory for the development of general instrumentation.  Specializing in the marine environment, Datawell developed the basic principles of the gravity stabilized long period motion sensors. That, in combination with designs for very low power electronics, resulted in the Waverider® wave measuring buoy (1968), the Wavec buoy (1983) and Directional Waverider® buoy (1988) for the measurement of wave height and direction.

MOSE-G1000Motion sensors designed for unattended operation in an environment as rough as the sea are well suited to measure the motion of a ship, so the development in the early seventies of the Heave, Piro (pitch-roll) and Hippy (heave-pitch-roll) ship motion sensors was a logical step.

Datawell BV is a private and fully independent company. Sound engineering and high quality are its first priority.

In 2001 a more extensive overview of datawell's history was made for our 40 years anniversary. You can read it here.
